Beijing: China has reported a fresh rise in COVID-19 infections, with nearly 79,000 new cases recorded during June. According to health authorities, 130 patients developed severe illness, while one death was reported. Experts, however, emphasize that the current situation is far less severe than the outbreak that began in Wuhan in 2020.

According to the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), the Omicron NB.1.8.1 variant is currently the dominant strain in circulation. Between July 13 and July 19, the COVID-19 test positivity rate increased to 16.3%, up from around 12% a week earlier. During the same period, influenza positivity declined to 12.6%, making COVID-19 the more prevalent respiratory infection.

Health officials stated that most patients are experiencing mild symptoms, including fever, sore throat, and cold-like illness, with the majority recovering within five to seven days.

Experts attribute the increase in infections to prolonged time spent in air-conditioned indoor spaces during summer and increased travel during the holiday season. Despite the rise in cases, hospitalizations and deaths have not increased proportionately.

At present, there is no indication that India faces an immediate public health threat from the NB.1.8.1 variant. Nevertheless, health experts advise elderly people, pregnant women, young children, immunocompromised individuals, and those with serious underlying illnesses to remain cautious.

Medical experts stress that while the rise in cases warrants close monitoring, there is no need for panic. Maintaining good hygiene, following public health precautions, and staying alert remain the best measures to prevent infection.
