IMD Warns of Heavy Rainfall in Odisha from August 12–14 as Low-Pressure Forms over Bay of Bengal

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple weather alerts for Odisha as a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by August 13, 2025. This system is expected to intensify the monsoon and bring widespread rainfall across the state between August 12 and 14. Heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30–40 km/h, is forecast for several districts, with an orange warning in place for Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Kandhamal, and Nabarangpur, indicating a higher risk of severe weather. A yellow warning has also been issued for many coastal and interior districts, including Ganjam, Khurda, and Puri. Today, a nowcast yellow alert was released around 3:05 pm for immediate rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in at least 11 districts—Puri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Nayagarh, Balasore, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kandhamal, and Khurda. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea off south Odisha’s coast on August 13–14 due to rough conditions, while district administrations have been instructed to remain on high alert for emergencies. Residents are urged to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid sheltering under trees, and keep away from exposed electrical infrastructure. Meteorologists expect the monsoon to strengthen further after August 14, enhancing rainfall across eastern and central India, including Odisha.
