At Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar, the liver of a 52-year-old brain-dead man was retrieved on Monday and sent for transplantation into a patient undergoing treatment at another hospital.
On August 31, Hulas Dihudi, who was working as a security guard in Chatabar, suffered severe injuries after being hit by a bike while walking on the road. He was immediately admitted to SUM Hospital and kept on ventilator support. However, due to traumatic brain injury and no improvement in his condition, he was declared brain-dead on Sunday.
Professor (Dr.) Pushparaj Samantsinghar, Medical Superintendent of SUM Hospital, said: “After informing the family about the situation, they consented to donate his organs, which can save other lives.”
The hospital authorities coordinated with the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTO) and the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTO) to carry out the organ retrieval procedure.
Professor Samantsinghar said: “This is the fourth instance at SUM Hospital where organs have been retrieved from a brain-dead person and sent for transplantation.”
