Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed that the United States enter into a new treaty to limit the number of nuclear weapons. According to Putin, this move could significantly enhance the prospects for long-term global peace.
A day before his scheduled meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska, Putin made the statement during a preparatory session with his senior ministers and security officials. In remarks broadcast on television, he noted that the U.S. is making serious and active efforts to end the war in Ukraine and to prevent the crisis from escalating.
Putin said that if an agreement is reached to limit nuclear arms, Russia and the U.S. could help maintain lasting peace across Europe and the world. He indicated that nuclear arms control would be a key topic in his upcoming talks with Trump. Russia currently holds the world’s largest nuclear arsenal, with around 5,500 warheads, while the U.S. has slightly fewer.
The current bilateral treaty on limiting nuclear weapons is set to expire on February 5, 2026. Putin’s adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said that the Russian leader may also discuss a potential trade agreement with his American counterpart. Friday’s meeting will mark the second formal encounter between the two leaders, following their July 2018 summit in Helsinki, Finland.
