In a chilling escalation of its ongoing war in Ukraine, Russia launched its largest combined drone and missile attack overnight, targeting Kyiv and several major cities across Ukraine. According to Ukrainian officials, more than 550 drones and missiles were fired in a coordinated strike that lasted several hours. This is the biggest air assault since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. The attacks caused widespread destruction, injured at least 23 civilians, and disrupted key infrastructure, including power grids, railway lines, and residential buildings.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting a significant number of incoming projectiles, but several still hit their targets, leading to multiple fires and damage in urban areas. Explosions were heard throughout Kyiv during the early morning hours, and emergency services rushed to control blazes caused by the strikes. Authorities have urged citizens to remain in shelters and minimize outdoor movement.
This unprecedented attack coincided with a scheduled phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump, raising concerns about the geopolitical signaling behind the offensive. Although the call reportedly discussed "de-escalation options," no concrete outcomes were reported. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, calling it “an act of terror against innocent civilians and a deliberate attempt to cripple Ukraine’s infrastructure.”
The international community has responded with alarm. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that “Russia’s aggressive actions continue to endanger European security.” The United Nations and European Union have also called for immediate de-escalation and renewed diplomatic engagement. Meanwhile, discussions are underway in Washington regarding potential increases in military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
As of now, Ukrainian forces remain on high alert, and rescue operations are ongoing in affected areas. With this attack, Russia has signaled a potential new phase of intensified warfare, possibly in retaliation for Ukraine’s gains in the Donetsk and Kharkiv regions earlier this summer.
