Awareness campaign on “Balanced Use of Fertilizers” at Keonjhar district, Odisha

ICAR-IIHR, Central Horticultural Experiment Station (CHES), Bhubaneswar, organized an awareness campaign on “Balanced Use of Fertilizers” on 24 April 2026 at Jatra Gram Panchayat, Bansapal Block, Keonjhar district, Odisha. The programme was held under the Nationwide Intensive Awareness Campaign, aimed at promoting science-based nutrient management and efficient input-use practices among farmers.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Shantanu Rakshit, Scientist (Agricultural Extension), who highlighted the importance of balanced fertilization in enhancing crop productivity, maintaining soil health, and ensuring sustainable agricultural development. He sensitized farmers on the judicious use of chemical fertilizers, the integration of organic nutrient sources, and the role of bio-inputs in modern agriculture.

Dr. Nigama Behera, Subject Matter Specialist (Agronomy), KVK Keonjhar, delivered an informative lecture on soil health management and the scientific application of fertilizers based on crop requirements and soil testing.

He emphasized the importance of integrated nutrient management for achieving higher yields while preserving long-term soil fertility. Ms. Sonali Pati, Assistant Horticulture Officer, Bansapal Block, encouraged farmers to adopt balanced fertilizer practices for sustainable horticultural production.

Mr. Manoj Pattanaik from CHES, Bhubaneswar, demonstrated the use of Arka Microbial Consortium (AMC) for various applications, including seed treatment, soil drenching, enrichment of farmyard manure, and mixing with cocopeat for nursery raising.

A total of 100 farmers, (90 women and 10 men), from villages such as Nadapani, Jatra, Raba, Klanda, Bayakumutia, and Adula including Lacal Sarpanch actively participated in the campaign. As part of the programme, Arka Microbial Consortium was distributed among the participating farmers to promote the adoption of beneficial microbial inputs for improving soil health and crop productivity. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Shantanu Rakshit and Mr. Manoj Pattanaik under the guidance of Dr. Gobinda Chandra Acharya, Head CHES, Bhubaneswar, and was facilitated by Gandhamardan Agro Producer Company Limited.
