Dhanu Yatra in Bargarh, Town Transforms into the World’s Largest Open-Air Theatre

The iconic Dhanu Yatra festival has commenced in Bargarh, Odisha, transforming the entire town into a vibrant and living stage for what is globally recognised as the world’s largest open-air theatre. The 78th edition of this unique 11-day cultural extravaganza began on December 24 and will continue till January 3, drawing lakhs of devotees, tourists, artists, and cultural enthusiasts from across the country.

On the occasion, President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, extended her warm greetings to the people, lauding the unparalleled tradition of Dhanu Yatra and its role in nurturing India’s cultural pride, spiritual consciousness, and folk heritage. The Odisha Government has sanctioned ₹1 crore for the successful organisation of the festival, ensuring enhanced arrangements for security, sanitation, traffic management, and cultural performances. Several events are also being live-streamed to reach audiences beyond geographical boundaries.

Union Education Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan and other eminent leaders conveyed their best wishes, highlighting Dhanu Yatra as a living symbol of Odisha’s rich cultural legacy. During the festival, Bargarh town is re-created as ancient Mathura, Ambapali as Gopapura, and the Jeera River as the Yamuna, where thousands of local artists and residents enact episodes from Krishna Leela, culminating in the dramatic slaying of King Kansa.

A unique feature of Dhanu Yatra is the symbolic reign of King Kansa, whose character interacts directly with citizens through humorous proclamations and spontaneous performances, blurring the line between actors and audience. The festival stands as a remarkable fusion of mythology, theatre, community participation, and living tradition, reaffirming its status as one of India’s most extraordinary cultural celebrations.
