Earlier this year, on August 1, a mild earthquake of 2.3 magnitude was recorded 91 kilometers from Loikaw. On July 31, another quake of 4.7 magnitude struck the region, but no major damage was reported.

On March 28, 2025, a devastating earthquake struck Myanmar, resulting in the death of over 3,700 people and injuring more than 4,800. The disaster led to food shortages and disruptions in many areas.
