An earthquake tremor shook Assam and was also felt in Siliguri. At 5:20 PM (IST) on Sunday, a quake of magnitude 5.8 struck with its epicenter in Udalguri district of Assam. Tremors were also felt in neighboring districts, as well as in West Bengal and Bhutan. Due to the sudden quake, people rushed out of their homes and shops, running towards open spaces and roads. During the tremors, fans and electrical appliances inside houses were seen shaking.
According to preliminary reports, no casualties or damage to property have been reported so far. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, while relief and rescue teams have been kept on alert. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) informed via social media that the epicenter of the quake was located within 5 kilometers of Udalguri.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Today, an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 struck Assam. Its epicenter was near Udalguri. Fortunately, no major damage or loss of life has been reported so far. We are continuously monitoring the situation.”
