India–Bangladesh Cricket Ties Strained After Mustafizur’s IPL Exit, Threat of Ban on IPL Broadcasts

Following the exclusion of Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL), cricketing relations between India and Bangladesh have entered a phase of serious tension. The incident has triggered indications of several strong countermeasures from the Bangladeshi side.

Initially, Bangladesh had threatened not to travel to India to participate in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Now, discussions have intensified over imposing a complete ban on the broadcast of IPL matches within Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’s Adviser for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Asif Nazrul, has called upon the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to impose a ban on IPL telecasts through a Facebook post. This comes despite the fact that T Sports holds the IPL broadcasting rights in Bangladesh until 2027.

However, neither the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) nor the government has issued any official statement on the matter so far.

According to the schedule of the 2026 T20 World Cup, Bangladesh has been placed in Group C along with England, Italy, Nepal and West Indies. Bangladesh is scheduled to play its opening match against West Indies on February 7, with its matches slated to be held in Kolkata and Mumbai. However, following the announcement of not travelling to India, uncertainty now looms over whether these matches will be conducted as planned.

It is noteworthy that during the IPL mini auction held last December, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) had acquired Mustafizur Rahman for ₹9.2 crore. However, following directives from the BCCI, KKR later released the Bangladeshi pacer, which has now emerged as the central point of contention between the two nations.
