At the 71st National Film Awards 2023, the Odia film ‘Pushkara’ has been awarded as the Best Odia Feature Film. More than just a movie, Pushkara is a powerful reflection of Odisha's culture, traditions, and rural values. The film is directed by Subhranshu Das, who is recognized for his efforts to bring a fresh vision to Odia cinema.
The story of ‘Pushkara’ is based on the novel ‘Nadabindu’ by author Shankar Tripathy. It revolves around a rural tradition called Pushkara Visarjan, performed after death. The narrative deeply explores human emotions, religious customs, and social beliefs. It portrays how traditions are deeply rooted in village life, while also presenting the pain, internal conflicts, and emotional depth tied to such rituals.
The film was shot entirely in the rural regions of Odisha, giving it an authentic and lifelike feel. Its storytelling combines theatrical strength with literary richness, setting it apart in its class.
Produced by Tarang Cine Productions, Pushkara has already been screened and appreciated at multiple film festivals, winning praise from audiences and critics alike. It had received accolades at both local and national levels, and now, with a National Award, it stands as a milestone for the Odia film industry.
Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, congratulated the entire team via his official handle on X (formerly Twitter), saying: “Pushkara has brought national recognition to Odia cinema. Congratulations to the producers, director, and the entire team. I wish that Odia films continue to grow through original and quality storytelling.”
Prior to this, ‘Pratikshya’ (2021) and ‘Daman’ (2022) had also received the National Award for Best Odia Film. With Pushkara continuing this legacy, it is evident that Odia cinema is heading toward a positive transformation and carving its place on the national and international stage.
