After U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of a 25% tariff on India, tensions have arisen in the trade and strategic relations between the two nations. Trump stated that India has so far conducted limited trade with the U.S. and imposes high duties on American products. Following this tariff move, India has decided not to purchase the F-35 stealth fighter jets from the U.S.
In a retaliatory message, India has conveyed to the U.S. that it is no longer interested in acquiring the F-35 jets. This was revealed in a report by Bloomberg. It is noteworthy that during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the U.S., Trump had offered the jets to India. However, after the 25% tariff imposition, India expressed its disinterest in the deal.
India is now focusing on indigenous design and manufacturing. The Modi government is seeking a defense model based on the "Make in India" initiative that allows domestic production and technology transfer. Additionally, India is considering increasing imports of natural gas, communication equipment, and gold from the U.S., aiming to reduce the trade imbalance between the two countries over the next three to four years.
