48th Annual Conference of Indian Botanical Society Begins in Shillong

The 48th Annual Conference of the Indian Botanical Society commenced at the campus of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, with an inspiring call to make scientific and botanical research more accessible to the common people.

Inaugurating the three-day international conference, Governor of Meghalaya Shri C. H. Vijay Shankar emphasized that scientific and chemical research must reach the masses to make science more engaging and help citizens become self-reliant. He highlighted that awareness about biodiversity among people can play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance.

Themed on “Plant Diversity in Biology and Biotechnology for Bioeconomy”, the international conference brought together eminent botanists, researchers, and academicians from across India and abroad.

Delivering his address as the Guest of Honour, noted botanist and Padma Shri awardee Prof. Sudhir Kumar Sopory stressed that collective efforts from all sections of society are essential to combat climate change effectively. Prof. Anil Kumar Tripathi, Director of IISER Mohali, spoke about how science and technology can drive social and economic development.

Prof. Saroj Barik, President of the Indian Botanical Society, introduced the distinguished guests, while Prof. Santaram proposed the vote of thanks. During the event, Padma Shri Eklabya Sharma, Prof. Pramod Kumar Tandon, and Prof. Sudhir Kumar Sopory were felicitated with special honors for their outstanding contributions to botanical science.

The inaugural day concluded with a vibrant cultural evening featuring traditional folk dances from various northeastern states, performed by university students.

The conference will continue over three days with multiple scientific sessions, paper presentations, and discussions on the role of plant science in promoting a sustainable bioeconomy.
