Big Relief for Employees: Full Pension Now After 20 Years of Service

After retirement, the biggest concern for employees is their retirement plan and pension. In India, there are two options available – NPS and UPS. From 1st April 2025, the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) has been implemented across the country.

Now, the government has taken an important step regarding UPS. The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions has amended the rules of UPS. From now on, if an employee completes 20 years of regular service, they will be entitled to full pension benefits.

Earlier, under UPS, only those who completed 25 years of service were eligible for full pension. This meant that even if someone worked for 24 years, they were not entitled to full benefits. Due to this, employee organizations had long been demanding a reduction in the pension eligibility limit, arguing that it is not easy for everyone to serve continuously for 25 years.

The government has now accepted this demand and reduced the requirement from 25 years to 20 years. This decision will bring major relief to millions of central employees, especially those who could not complete 25 years of service due to health issues, family responsibilities, or opting for early retirement.

Under UPS, employees will not only receive pension but also additional benefits. If an employee becomes disabled during service, they will receive pension benefits. In case of death during service, the family will be entitled to a secured pension.

The family may choose between CCS pension rules and UPS rules, as per their preference. This ensures that employees and their families are financially secured not only after retirement but also during any unfortunate incidents while in service.
