CSIR-IMMT Organizes Workshop-cum-Training Programme to Revitalize Odisha’s Heritage Metal Craft

The CSIR–Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (CSIR-IMMT), Bhubaneswar, organized a workshop-cum-training programme on “S&T Intervention for Revitalizing Heritage Metal Craft of Odisha” with the objective of strengthening traditional metal craft practices through modern scientific and technological interventions. The programme aimed at empowering artisans by enhancing productivity, quality, and sustainability of heritage metal crafts while preserving their cultural essence.

The training programme witnessed enthusiastic participation of around 250 artisans from various districts of Odisha. The technical sessions focused on critical aspects such as improved brass melting techniques, forming processes, surface finishing, and decorative coatings. The programme effectively blended hands-on practical sessions with interactive discussions, enabling participants to gain both theoretical knowledge and real-time practical exposure.

The programme was inaugurated by Shri Pradeep Bal Samanta, Hon’ble Minister, Cooperation, Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts (HT&H), Government of Odisha. Mrs. Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary to the Government, Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts Department, graced the occasion as Guest of Honour. Addressing the gathering, the Hon’ble Minister outlined the State Government’s initiatives and future roadmap to support and rejuvenate the heritage metal craft sector of Odisha.

During the inaugural session, Dr. Ramanuj Narayan, Director, CSIR-IMMT, highlighted the institute’s sustained research and development efforts in the area of metal crafts and its commitment towards technology dissemination for artisan welfare. Dr. A. K. Chaubey, Chief Scientist and Convener of the programme, elaborated on the objectives, structure, and key highlights of the training programme.

Scientists from CSIR-IMMT shared their technical expertise and practical insights throughout the day, enabling artisans to integrate scientific understanding with traditional craftsmanship. Hands-on training and live demonstrations were conducted at the CSIR-IMMT–CRTDH Centre, which received high appreciation from the participants for their practical relevance and applicability.

The inaugural programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Y. S. Chaudhary, Chief Scientist, CSIR-IMMT, who expressed sincere gratitude to the dignitaries, resource persons, artisans, coordinators, and supporting staff for their valuable contributions towards the successful organization of the programme.
