Exotic Eustoma Blooms in Odisha for the First Time, Opening New Avenues for Farmers

A research wing of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), Lucknow, has achieved a milestone by blooming the exotic flower *Eustoma* for the first time in Odisha inside a polyhouse developed by NBRI. Until now, this flower was only available through imports, but its local cultivation has now opened new opportunities for farmers to grow exotic flowers and earn profits.

After successfully cultivating *Eustoma* at its Lucknow campus, NBRI has now created a new milestone by growing it in a polyhouse at Sanatanpali in Sambalpur district, Odisha. Native to Mexico and the United States, this flower brings a golden opportunity for farmers in the state.

NBRI Director Dr. Ajit Kumar Shasani said, “This will open a new path for flower growers and create a big opportunity for their livelihood.” Scientists had conducted months of research to test whether the plant could survive in hot conditions. If *Eustoma* can thrive in Sambalpur, farmers will be able to cultivate it commercially in their own fields.

This marks a significant opportunity for hi-tech floriculture in Odisha. With the sale of exotic flowers in the local market, farmers can earn additional income. *Eustoma* can be harvested twice a year, providing profits of up to ₹2 lakh per acre. The Sanatanpali site is one of over 400 clusters developed by NBRI across India.

Along with *Eustoma*, NBRI also provides planting material and technologies for Marigold, Jasmine, Gerbera, Tuberose, Gladiolus, and Lotus. Farmers are also given training and marketing support.

There is strong potential for *Eustoma* trade in the state’s local markets. It can even replace roses since *Eustoma* stays fresh for a longer duration. For this, special training will be provided to local farmers.

In the future, NBRI plans to expand exotic flower cultivation to other districts of southern Odisha, including Koraput, thereby providing farmers with new opportunities for additional income.
