Two former Indian international cricketers, Pragyan Ojha and RP Singh, are likely to be appointed as members of the national selection committee. At present, there are two vacancies in the committee, and the BCCI had invited applications for these posts last month. Along with them, Praveen Kumar, Ashisht Bhishtan Zaidi, and Shakti Singh are also in the race, but Ojha and RP Singh are said to be the frontrunners.
The BCCI has set certain criteria for the positions vacated by Subroto Banerjee (Central Zone) and S. Sharath (South Zone). According to a report in *The Indian Express*, Pragyan Ojha is being considered from the South Zone, while RP Singh is likely to be selected from the Central Zone.
Former fast bowler RP Singh, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, faces competition from fellow UP pacer Praveen Kumar. Having played several international matches, Praveen Kumar is also seen as a strong contender. As per BCCI’s rules, a candidate must have played at least 7 Test matches or 30 first-class matches, or 10 ODIs and 20 first-class games. Additionally, the candidate should have retired from cricket at least 5 years ago and must not have been part of any cricket committee in the last 5 years.
Pragyan Ojha has represented India in 24 Tests, 18 ODIs, and 6 T20 Internationals. RP Singh has played 14 Tests, 58 ODIs, and 10 T20Is, while Praveen Kumar has 6 Tests, 68 ODIs, and 10 T20Is to his name.
There is a strong possibility that from next month, Pragyan Ojha and RP Singh will take charge as the new national selectors.
