Flood Threat Eases: River Levels Recede, Water Discharge Continues from Hirakud

The water levels of the Subarnarekha, Jalaka, and Baitarani rivers are receding. As a result, there is currently no flood situation in the state. Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department, Chandrasekhar Padhi, informed that the declining river levels are helping to drain the stagnant water from the low-lying areas. The overall rainfall in the state has also decreased, reducing the threat of flooding.

At present, 20 gates of the Hirakud Dam have been opened to discharge floodwater. The reservoir’s water level stands at 614.27 feet, with an inflow of 2.76 lakh cusecs. Authorities are closely monitoring the inflow and plan to gradually close the gates accordingly. All major rivers are currently flowing below the danger mark.

In the past few days, continuous rainfall had led to a rise in river water levels, submerging several low-lying regions. With water levels now receding, affected residents are getting some relief, although hardships persist. It is expected that the state administration will extend relief measures to these areas.
