Former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been arrested on charges of misusing public funds. He will be produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate. According to an AFP report, in September 2023, while serving as President, Wickremesinghe allegedly used state funds for an event held in honor of his wife. His arrest came after questioning regarding his London visit. During interrogation, Wickremesinghe stated that his wife had traveled at her own expense and no government funds were used. It is worth noting that in 2022, then-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country, after which Wickremesinghe took charge as President and served from 2022 to 2024. He has also served as Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister six times.
