The Indian women’s cricket team created history by winning the World Cup trophy for the first time. In the 2025 final, India defeated South Africa by 52 runs to become world champions. With this victory, women’s cricket has found a new champion team.
Batting first in the final, India scored 298 runs. In reply, South Africa were bowled out for 246 runs in 45.3 overs, giving Team India a historic victory.
With this win, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur joined the elite ranks of Kapil Dev and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, as all three captains have led India to World Cup triumphs.
The Women’s World Cup began in 1973, but India had never won the trophy before. Though the team reached the finals in 2005 and 2017, it ended up as runners-up. Finally, in 2025, under Harmanpreet’s leadership, the team fulfilled its long-cherished dream and wrote history.
Chasing a target of 299 runs, South Africa got off to a good start with an opening partnership of 51 runs. However, Amanjot Kaur provided India the first breakthrough by running out Tazmin Brits (23).
Thereafter, the bowling of Shricharini, Shafali, and Deepti Sharma kept the South African batters under constant pressure. Captain Laura Wolvaardt (101 runs) fought hard, but Deepti Sharma dismissed her to seal India’s victory.
Deepti Sharma took five wickets in the match and scored 58 runs with the bat, earning the “Player of the Match” award.
Batting first, India got a brilliant start from Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana, who added 104 runs for the opening wicket. Smriti scored 45 off 58 balls, while Shafali made 87 off 78 balls (7 fours, 2 sixes).
Jemimah Rodrigues, who had scored a century in the semifinal, managed only 24 runs this time. Captain Harmanpreet (20), Richa Ghosh (34), and Deepti Sharma (58) played valuable innings to take the team’s total to 298.
For South Africa, Ayabonga Khaka took three wickets. With this historic win, the Indian women’s cricket team has reached new heights, sparking waves of pride and joy across the nation.
