At the World Weightlifting Championship held in Forde, Norway, Indian star lifter Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal. This is her third medal at the tournament, placing her among India’s leading weightlifters.
Earlier, she had won gold in the 48 kg category at the 2017 Anaheim World Championships and silver in the 49 kg category in 2022.
This time, Mirabai lifted a total of 199 kg — 84 kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean & jerk — to secure the silver medal in the 48 kg category. North Korea’s Ri Sang Gum claimed gold with 213 kg, while China’s Thanythan settled for bronze.
Although Mirabai was trailing by 4 kg in the snatch round, she made a remarkable comeback in the clean & jerk, edging past the Chinese lifter by 1 kg to clinch the silver.
After her victory, she expressed special gratitude to her coach Vijay Sharma. Having battled through injuries in recent years, this achievement holds special significance for her. Earlier this year, she also won the gold medal at the National Championship held in Ahmedabad.
