After a long gap of one year, star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu made a victorious comeback. At the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship held on Monday, she lifted a total of 193 kg (84 kg snatch and 109 kg clean & jerk) in the 48 kg category, setting a new record and clinching the gold medal. The Tokyo Olympic silver medallist earlier competed in the 49 kg category, but after this class was removed from the Olympics, she switched back to 48 kg. After finishing fourth at the Paris Olympics, she stayed away from competitions due to injury and took time to regain her rhythm. In the snatch, her first attempt at 84 kg failed, but she succeeded in the second attempt. She, however, missed the 89 kg lift. In clean & jerk, she began with 105 kg, went on to successfully lift 109 kg, but failed in her final attempt at 113 kg. Malaysia’s Irene Henry won silver with 161 kg, while Wales’ Nicole Roberts bagged bronze with 150 kg. For Mirabai, this achievement is not just a victory but a dream comeback, reflecting her experience, patience, and indomitable fighting spirit.
