Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday over the phone. During the call, Putin briefed Modi about his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska. The key agenda of the meeting was to explore ways to permanently end the Russia-Ukraine war. Putin described the discussions as “clear, peaceful, and meaningful.”
Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s consistent stance that it has always supported a peaceful resolution of the conflict and will back every effort in this direction. In a post on ‘X,’ Modi thanked President Putin for the call and for sharing details of his meeting with Trump.
Following his talks with Trump on Saturday, Putin had said they discussed ways to “end the war fairly.” He described the meeting as “very useful.” Trump, too, called the talks “effective” but clarified that no final agreement had been reached yet. He also revealed that he had pressed Ukraine to accept Russia’s terms for a ceasefire.
Just days before this phone call, the US announced a new 25% tariff on Indian goods. The move came in response to India purchasing crude oil from Russia at discounted rates. Trump alleged that this trade was financially supporting the Russia-Ukraine war. However, India strongly rejected the claim, arguing that while Western nations may afford costly energy, India needs affordable supplies to meet the needs of its 1.4 billion people. India termed the tariff “unfair and unreasonable.”
