The water level of the Yamuna River in Delhi is continuously rising. By 7 AM on Wednesday, the water level of the Yamuna had reached 206.86 meters. Water has started entering low-lying areas, reaching near Old Usmanpur village and Garhi Mandu village.
For safety reasons, train movement on the Yamuna iron bridge has been suspended. Road traffic was already halted after the Yamuna crossed the 206-meter mark. Later, from 6:30 AM today, train operations were also stopped. However, the water level of the Yamuna is expected to recede from tonight.
On Tuesday afternoon, after the Yamuna water level rose above 206 meters, the Shahdara district administration closed the Old Iron Bridge for vehicular movement. Delhi Police placed barricades and sealed the bridge. Additionally, police and paramilitary forces were deployed in the area. Due to the bridge closure, traffic pressure has increased on Shastri Park Pushta Road and Gandhi Nagar Road.
Police had already issued an advisory for drivers. Those traveling from Gandhi Nagar to Old Delhi were advised to take the Geeta Colony flyover. Similarly, commuters from the Old Hanuman Temple at Yamuna Bazaar heading towards Yamunapar were directed to use Kashmere Gate and Shahdara GT Road.
Near the iron bridge on the Gandhi Nagar side, an illegal cowshed had been built on DDA land. As floodwaters entered, all cattle were evacuated from the cowshed. The administration said it was not possible to release so many cows on the streets. Therefore, about 400 cows have been kept inside the bridge area.
