China’s latest weapon development has heightened tensions for U.S. President Donald Trump. The country has developed an upgraded version of its fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, the J-20, known as the “J-20A” or the “Mighty Dragon.” This advanced aircraft is set to elevate the combat strength of China’s air force to new heights. Unlike the U.S. F-22 and F-35, the J-20A is specifically designed for long-range combat missions.
The upgraded J-20A is powered by two powerful Shenyang WS-15 afterburning turbofan engines that are both fuel-efficient and highly capable. These engines are said to outperform those used in the American F-22 and F-35. The aircraft can stay airborne for extended periods while effectively evading radar detection. Its front profile is designed with an exceptionally low radar cross-section, making it nearly impossible to detect from the front.
According to a report published in National Security General, the J-20A has an impressive weapons-carrying capacity. It can carry long-range air-to-air missiles like the PL-15 and PL-21. Smaller missiles can also be housed in its side bays, allowing the jet to fire even when the bays are closed.
With a fuel capacity of around 12,000 kilograms and a combat range of approximately 2,000 kilometers, the J-20A is capable of both air-to-air and attack missions. Its in-flight refueling capability enables it to operate for longer durations. Equipped with advanced navigation systems and electronic warfare technologies, the J-20A is regarded as China’s most advanced and lethal fighter jet — posing a new challenge to America’s F-22 and F-35.
